Apple Watch 7 vs Apple Watch 6

By Scott Anfield. Updated: Feb 3, 2022

Unveiling Apple products is a key point in the year, especially because we get to see what upgrades our devices have had. This creates the desire to drop the old versions of our devices and buy new ones. So, how do they compare? We take a look at the Apple Watch 7 vs Apple Watch 6.

Apple Watch 7

If you are an Apple Watch fan or are considering investing in your first Apple Watch, then now is a good time. Thinking about whether you want the Series 6 or the brand new Series 7 can be confusing. Your decision can become even more complex if you already own the 6 and considering upgrading. But don’t panic; we’ve got all the information you need below so that you can make the right device decision.

The Difference in Design

The one thing Apple is well known for is not changing the physical design of their watches very much at each upgrade. In fact, when you look at Series 4 and 5 together, you won’t see any difference in the way they look. However, the new Apple Watch comes with a curvy look that softens the appearance of the watch. In comparison, the Series 6 is more squared off.

Both watches offer 50 meters of swim-proof support, allowing you to get in the water without any worries. The difference with the new Series 7 is that it has more robust dust and shatter-proof design and an IP6X certificate. This is great if you need that assurance that no dust will enter the watch depending on where you use it or work.

The Difference in Display

The new Apple Watch 7 offers an upgrade in this department! The new display is 20% larger than the Apple Watch 6, making the screen easier to read without any major increase in chassis size.

In addition, the new Apple Watch 7 offers up to 70% more brightness than the Series 6. Consider this given that that the Series 6 already offered a 50% upgrade from the Series 4! This additional brightness could really help if you’re out and about in the sun.

The Difference in Features

Most of us look forward to the new features that Apple drops when they announce a new product. In general, we could say that the Apple Watch 7 was not as exciting as we had hoped, with a minimal upgrade compared to previous years. When the Apple Watch 6 was released, we enjoyed the new Sp02 monitor and the always-on altimeter, among other features.

The Series 7 does not come with any specific fitness upgrades. That said, there is a software update coming with WatchOS 8 that adds tracking for more activities.

However, and this is where the big difference is in our opinion: The new watch offers a complete keyboard that you can use to type. You can use it to text and reply to messages, and it brings the watch a step closer to being able to replace your phone. In reality, we are a bit disappointed with the lack of other new features. Still, these changes in the watch design make it a worthwhile consideration, especially if you like the full keyboard ability. Not that you couldn’t reply to messages with the Apple Watch 6 by either handwriting/OCR or by its voice-to-text feature, but it’s a nice feature nonetheless.

The Difference in Battery Life

Battery life is a long-standing gripe for many users, with the average battery lasting just 18 hours before needing to be charged. When the Series 6 was released, we all expected it to be upgraded, but it wasn’t, and so we’ve waited to see if the Series 7 will have something more to offer.

Unfortunately, the new Series 7 offers no change in battery life either! This still means you will need to be willing to charge your watch every day!. However, it’s not all doom and gloom! The new Series 7 does come with up to 33% faster charging. The magnetic charging cable input now uses USB-C . This is quite disappointing.

Apple Watch 7 vs Apple Watch 6 Comparison Chart

Sometimes it helps to see the comparisons side by side to get a complete overview of the changes, or lack of changes, in a new Apple device. When you look at the key stats in the table below, it becomes very clear what the biggest physical changes are. Improved charging time and display size. This leaves you wondering if it’s worth investing in the new watch or not. Especially if you already own the 6 and considering an upgrade.

Choosing the Best Option

When it comes to deciding which Apple Watch is best for you, it is essential to consider what is important for you in a device. If you are looking for a sleek aesthetic and a bright screen, the Series 7 may be the right choice. Other than this, if you are keen to get the best deal and the best software, then sticking with the Series 6 will not let you down. Remember, there are also some really good alternatives to the Apple Watch.

In reality, many of us thought that the new Series 7 would be the upgrade that consumers have been looking for. Unless you really need the stronger and brighter screen or yearn for that full keyboard, upgrading from the Series 6 to the Series 7 is probably not a wise idea. However, if you are new to the Apple Watch, the Series 7 is a great place to start!
