Samsung Galaxy Watch 3

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3

Samsung is a name that comes with high expectations, and their Galaxy Watch 3 is no exception! If you are looking for one of the best smartwatch experiences, then you have found it with this device. It offers a range of great features and operates with Samsung’s own operating system. It is a great companion if you have a Samsung phone, and while it is not without fault, it is a great choice for anyone that wants a device they can trust.

How Good is the Design of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3?

When you consider that this device is the upgraded version of the first Galaxy Watch and as such, you would expect it to have been refined for sale. Therefore you will not be disappointed to learn that this version is slimmer, sleeker and lighter than ever before and is more comfortable to wear.

It comes in a 41mm and a 45mm sized option so that you can decide the size you want to wear. This should not affect the running of the watch in any other way. The screen is incredibly easy to read and offers a 360 x 360 resolution. Plus with the brightness levels, you can see it in any light and weather conditions.

The 45mm version weighs in at 53.8g, and the 41mm version is 43g. Meaning that when it is on your wrist, it will not be too heavy or uncomfortable. You will also enjoy the comfort of the black leather straps that make it a great device to wear all day.

What Features Does the Samsung Galaxy 3 Watch Offer?

When it comes to features, this device is packed full of them!  You can download apps from the Tizen store and link it directly to your smartphone so that you get all your notifications as they come in. While Samsung would prefer you to use their watch with their own brand phones, they also work well with other devices such as Apple but don’t support all the functions you could use if you have a Samsung phone (replying to messages or finding your phone for example).

Samsung has also worked hard to produce a watch that accurately tracks all your fitness. There are seven activities that will track automatically, saving you the hassle of having to remember to press start and stop. You can also use it to track up to forty other activities depending on what you are interested in. The tracking is highly accurate and gives you feedback that you can use to monitor progress and target set for future exercise.

What is the Battery Life Like on the Samsung Galaxy 3 Watch?

The battery life of this watch has become a real talking point because the company decided to reduce the battery life in order to slim down the watch. The result is that it will only run for two to three days before needing to charge. If you exercise frequently or use the GPS a lot, you will find that you may even need to charge the watch daily to ensure that you don’t run out halfway through the day.

The battery life is not an issue if you have access to power and remember to plug it in each day, but if you wanted something that would last longer between charges, then this is probably not the device for you.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Good Value for Money?

When it comes to purchasing this watch outright, it’s not too expensive for all the great features that are on offer. However, if you want to be able to use it with your phone, you will also need to factor in a monthly contract.

Many providers will now sell smartwatches on contracts like mobile phones, so it is well worth shopping around to get the best deal before you part with your money.

Amazfit X

Amazfit X

The Huami Amazfit X was first mentioned over a year ago. It has been crowdfunding ever since to be able to move the fitness tracker from concept into a reality. Currently, in production, this fitness tracker is nearly ready to hit the market and promises a wide range of exciting features.

Huami explains that they have chosen crowdfunding as a way to access people who love technology, who want to be part of a brand new concept and are willing to try something brand new. The shipping date has been put back a couple of times but currently Huami state that they will be ready to ship their finished products from October onwards.

What is the Design Like?

The Amazfit X offers a button-free design and a 92 degree curved face to reduce the need to scroll so much. It has an HD resolution for a super clear display. As well as offering high brightness levels to make what you see as sharp as possible. It works well in direct light so that you can see what you need, no matter the weather or the location.

Because it is curved, you will be able to see everything you need and enjoy total comfort at all times. It literally wraps around your wrist. It is so light that you will easily forget that you even have it on! Huami explains that to give their screen that perfect curve that they have to heat the glass to 700 degrees and then follow a six-step process to curve it without compromising on quality or safety.

What Features Does the Huami Amazfit X Offer?

As this watch offers a button-free design, the makers have included a pressure-sensitive touch button that responds when you press on an app. You will be impressed with the number of features on offer, including heart rate monitoring and stress level monitoring so that you can take time out when you need it the most.

When it comes to fitness, you can use the nine in-built sports modes so that you know how well you are performing where you need to focus your next steps for even better outcomes. It is even waterproof so that you can continue tracking when you go for a swim. In addition to the fitness tracking, this watch comes with a range of health tracking options too and will act as a coach to give you personalised goals to work to.

The watch offers other tracking systems too such as sleep tracking and blood oxygen level monitoring so that you get the full picture of where you are at and what you need to work on to optimize your health and wellbeing.

How Good is the Battery Life on the Huami Amazfit X?

With everything that this watch offers you would expect it to need daily charging, but it does not. In fact, you can expect a full seven days of normal use before you need to plug it in. This is great news for anyone that wants the ability to track their sleep without worrying about running out of charge in the day time.

When it comes to charging, you simply clip the watch onto the charging cable, plug the cable in and leave it to get to work. Charging time is quick and can be done from any location as long as there is a power source.

Is the Huami Amazfit X Good Value for Money?

When you consider everything it has to offer, the $329 price tag makes sense. The only issue is knowing whether it is worth it or not as the devices have not yet been released. The reality of the situation is that you will need to be willing to take a risk in order to get hold of one of these devices and wait to see if it lives up to expectations.

In fairness, Huami makes it clear that they want people who are excited by new tech to purchase their watch so if you are looking for something proven to work then this may not be the best option for you. However, if you love new tech and don’t mind the risk, then buying one of these watches may give you first access to something that will revolutionise the smartwatch market forever.

Pros and Cons of the Huami Amazfit X

Before you invest in any new tech, it is important to consider all the pros and cons to help you decide if you want to invest. We have listed the most significant pros and cons below to help you decide:

Pros
  • Huge range of fitness tracking options.
  • Comprehensive health and wellbeing options.
  • Beautifully designed and offers a cutting edge curved screen.
  • Lightweight design that fits snugly on your wrist.
  • Exclusive crowdfunding purchase making you one of the first to own it.
  • No button screen makes it sleek.
Cons
  • Risk of the unknown until the product begins to ship.
  • Expensive investment without knowing how good the watch really is.

Should I Invest in a Huami Amazfit X?

If you are keen to get your hands on the latest tech and don’t mind being a crowdfunding adopter, then this watch may be the perfect choice for you. There are not many first edition options left available for purchase, but if you are quick, then you may be able to get your hands on one before the October shipping date, making you one of the first people to try out this new design.

With the latest in health monitoring, high-quality fitness tracking and beautiful design, you are sure to be the envy of all your friends. However, you will need to be willing to wait just a little bit longer to get your hands on one of these watches; let’s hope the shipping date is not put back any further again!

If new watches are something you are a fan of, then you could also consider the latest releases from Apple, we’ve compared them in our article here.

TicWatch GTX

Tic Watch GTX

Mobvoi has released their latest watch, and shockingly they are not using Wear-OS this time round! The TicWatch GTX makes use of a proprietary operating system, and while it is not as sophisticated as Wear-OS, it has given them the ability to personalise what they offer to their customers. With a whole host of features, this watch may be the perfect choice for your next piece of wrist wear.

What Does the Mobvoi TicWatch GTX Look Like?

The TicWatch GTX is a black device that has a 1.28-inch screen and a 240 x 240 display. It has a colour screen that lights up well when in use and is clear to read so that you are always in the know. There are two crown buttons that you can operate the device with and with a second hand, you will always be able to know precisely how fast you complete your exercise.

The watch is comfortable to wear and is not garish or too large on the wrist, and you can even personalise your watch face from a library of suitable options. The strap is made from Thermoplastic Polyurethane that is 20mm thick and feels surprisingly comfortable on the wrist. In fact, once you have gotten used to it being on your wrist, you will forget it is even there until a notification springs up for you to check.

How Good Are the Mobvoi TicWatch GTX Features?

The TicWatch GTX works hard and offers a good range of features, including the ability to connect to your smartphone and share notifications with you when they come in. It will even help you to find your phone if you ever misplace it!

There are fourteen different fitness workouts that will help you track your runs, swims, bike rides and many more. You can also expect to get information on the state of your heart health, and it will also count your steps, making it a great choice for anyone that wants to understand their fitness better than before.

Away from the fitness features, you can expect to see a torch, time, calls and notifications, stopwatch and even a weather app that you can use wherever you are. However, updating information is purely limited to Bluetooth as there is no WiFi available, nor is there a GPS option to plot where you have been.

Is the Mobvoi TicWatch GTX Good Value for Money?

One of the best things about this watch is that it is really good value and comes in under £55. The reason that it is so cheap is that it does not attempt to contend with the big-name brands but focuses more on offering some great features that will not break the bank!

However, with a low budget does come the need to compromise, and there are areas of this device that could have done with an upgrade. Yes, it offers good fitness tracking, but the addition of GPS would have been better, and yes, it connects via Bluetooth but adding WiFi would have made it more accessible. In reality, if you are looking for a watch that does it all, then this device probably won’t impress you as much as you hoped, but if you want a budget option then it may be just right!

How Long Does the Mobvoi TicWatch GTX Battery Life Last?

When you consider that this watch comes in at such a low price point, you would forgive it for not offering a good battery life. However, instead of opting for a poor battery, Mobvoi installed a battery that comes with around ten days of use in Power Saver mode and seven days of regular use.

The reason the battery is able to last so long is that the operating system is not a highly demanding system, and the tech parts inside the watch also do not need a lot of power to function. This makes it a great watch for everyday use, and you will only need to remember to plug it in every seven days or so!

Pros and Cons of the Mobvoi TicWatch GTX

When it comes to deciding whether to buy a watch or not, you should always consider all the pros and cons before purchasing. To help, we have listed the most significant pros and cons to owning this watch below.

Pros
  • It comes in at excellent value for money and is perfect on a budget.
  • Battery life is up to seven days for normal use and ten days on power saver mode.
  • Water-resistant so that you can wear it when you go for a swim without worrying.
  • Bluetooth connectivity links your phone to your watch so that you can get all notifications and calls.
  • It is comfortable to wear and is not too heavy on the wrist.
  • You can customise your watch face from a library of choices.
  • It is made from great quality materials and is built to last.
Cons
  • The operating system is not as sleek as other big name brands.
  • No in-built WiFi, meaning you are restricted to Bluetooth.
  • No GPS to track your exercise routes.
  • Not as many lifestyle apps as there could be.
  • The brand is not as well known as others, meaning that there is less likelihood of it offering all the features you may want.

Should I Buy the Mobvoi TicWatch GTX?

If you are looking for a budget watch that provides excellent battery life and a range of apps that help you through the day, then the Mobvoi TicWatch GTX may be the perfect choice! It may not have GPS, WiFi or big brand operating system but what it lacks in these areas it makes up for in price! Give it a try, and we are sure that you will be impressed with how much you can get for your money.

Sony SmartWatch 3

Sony Smartwatch 3

Back in 2014, Sony released the Smartwatch 3. A futuristic looking piece of kit that offered a wide range of features to the Android market. Fast forward to today, and you will be hard pressed to find one of these on the market. Mainly because the range has been discontinued and Sony has not updated the watch software to move with the times. However, if you have managed to get your hands on one, then you will probably want to know what it offers. Read on to find out more.

What Kind of Design Does the Sony Smartwatch 3 Offer?

With so many smartwatches working hard to look like classic timepieces, the Sony Smartwatch 3 goes in a totally different direction and embraces the fact that it dares to be different. It has a large, square face, rubber strap and looks pretty outdated compared to today’s standards.

However, the screen is easy to read and simple to put on and take off. There is an upgraded metal strap that gives it a more expensive vibe but all in all, this watch looks very much like a fitness tracker and would be at home on the wrist of someone who enjoys training.

How Easy is the Sony Smartwatch 3 to Use?

This device is powered by Android Wear and works well if you are not used to wearing a smartwatch. The decision to not update it over the years has meant that the functionality is not what it once was and it is therefore much harder to use if you wanted it as an everyday watch. When it comes to using the watch, you simply tap the screen to bring it to life or cover it with your palm to dim it when you have finished.

You can long press to select the screen that suits you best and swipe through cards that show you the forecast, traffic and other useful information. Swiping down will find the battery status and turn on cinema mode to silence the watch. You can also use voice commands to send messages by saying ‘OK Google’. The tech is spot on when it comes to functionality, keeping you in touch wherever you go.

How Good is the Sony Smartwatch 3 Battery Life?

The battery that powers this watch is a 420mAh and offers a decent amount of time before you need to charge. With average use, you can expect to have to plug your phone in once every two days. However, if you are planning to use it to stay in touch all day, then you will probably find that it will manage around a day and a half before it needs some recharge time.

Charging is done with a micro-USB that slots into a port on the watch. This gives you the freedom to charge wherever you go as the wire is easily transportable and can be plugged into any device with a USB slot or a USB plug.

What Kind of Apps Are Available On the Sony Smartwatch 3?

When it comes to installing the apps you want, then you can select from the wide range that is available on the Android market. However, as the watch has not been updated to the latest Android offering, then you may find that the choice is limited to what is able to be used on your device. If you have had the watch a while, then you will be able to continue using the apps you previously downloaded but will not be able to update them.

There is an in-built GPS option, and you can take it swimming or in the shower as it is waterproof. There is also pre-installed fitness tracking that you can use alongside the companion app to discover how well your workouts have gone and check the progress you make over time.

The Pros and Cons of the Sony Smartwatch 3

As with all devices, you can expect a range of pros and cons. To make your decision making easier, we have detailed the main pros and cons below so that you can get an idea of what you would be spending your money on.

Pros
  • Fairly decent battery life that can last up to two days.
  • A comfortable strap that can be worn all day without irritation.
  • Clear screen and always on feature that makes it easy for you to read when you want to.
  • Screen dimming is straightforward by simply covering it with your palm.
  • Range of Android apps to choose from.
  • Simple to charge with a micro USB.
  • It is simple to use and easy to understand.
Cons
  • The watch is somewhat outdated and cannot access the latest Android services.
  • The apps are not as varied as you would expect from a smartwatch these days.
  • The watch design is not in line with more modern models.
  • The GPS option drains the battery very quickly.
  • It looks more like a fitness tracker than a smartwatch.
  • It is very hard to find in the current market.
  • The GPS is not as accurate as we would have hoped.

The Verdict: Is the Sony Smartwatch 3 Worth it?

In reality, no matter how good the tech was when it was released nor how good the battery life is, this watch is no longer a market competitor. If you have one and do not mind that it has not been updated, then we are sure you can continue to use it with minimal fuss or hassle.

However, if you are considering purchasing one, then it really is not worth it unless you are looking to save a piece of history. They are hard to find, very outdated and do not beat or even meet the current competition. The Sony Smartwatch 3 is ultimately not worth spending your money on.

The new Apple Watch SE – Review

Apple Watch SE – Image Credit: Apple

The Apple Watch SE was revealed this week along with the Apple Watch 6. It’s been marketed as the more accessible Apple Watch and it really is. People should not be fooled into thinking it is a cheap version.

It’s stripped back, but it’s got a powerful punch. If you compared the SE to an Apple Watch Series 3, you’d see that you get a superior model for your money.

With that, people are referring to the SE as the successor of the Apple Watch 3 and that’s a fair assessment. The Series 3 is not being reduced in price and is still available around $264.

The Apple Watch SE is by no means ‘cheap’. It’s less than a Galaxy Watch 3, granted, but it lines up with the eagerly anticipated Fitbit Versa 3, Oppo Watch and Huawei Watch GT2.

Here’s everything you’ll want to know about the new Apple Watch SE.

The design is the same as the Apple Watch Series 6, but doesn’t come in as many options. It got its shape from the Series 4, although naturally Apple have made some minor changes and the SE is incredibly sleek. You get the same dimensions and display (including the resolution) as the Series 6, so you can trust you’re getting a quality visual experience.

It comes in the standard 40mm and 44mm sizing.

It will come in an LTE version. This will not only be capable of making phone calls, but thanks to the latest WearOS 7 on board, allows users to enjoy the new Family Setup feature. This makes the SE a great smartwatch for families with kids or elderly relatives. The user can pair a Watch with an iPhone. Meaning, you can limit the use of the watch for kids (things like only sending messages to trusted contacts or selected app downloads). Best of all, no one will get lost by using the location tracking features. Safety is paramount!

  • GPS model lets you take calls and reply to texts from your wrist
  • Measure your blood oxygen with an all-new sensor and app
  • Check your heart rhythm with the ECG app

Quick comparison – SE versus 6

The SE doesn’t come with the newer S6 chip, and that’s the compromise you make. There’s an S5 chip inside but it’s still twice as fast as the Series 3. You’ll need this as Apple’s apps continue to improve.

You shouldn’t expect the ECG and blood oxygen sensors, so the SE is more a smartwatch than fitness and health tracker.

You don’t get an always-on display, so you still need to flick your wrist to see your notifications or the time.

Don’t fear, it’s not all cut-backs; you get access to new features.

SE and Series 6 users can both enjoy the accurate accelerometer and altimeter as well as noise monitoring, fall detection and improved emergency SOS features.

Release date and price

You can order your SE (or 6) right now and shipping starts Friday, September 18th.

The SE model also comes in 40mm or 44mm versions and starts at $279 if you want the GPS variant.

If you want to enjoy the location tracking features, you’ll need the cellular version which starts from $329.

If you’re not sure which Apple watch is best for you then we have created an easy comparison of all Apple offerings from the first generation to the Series 6 and SE. Check it out here.

The Apple Watch 6 versus Apple Watch SE – What’s the difference?

Apple Watch 6 vs SE. Image Credit: Apple

Apple launched two new smartwatches this week (on September 15th), the Apple Watch 6 and Apple Watch SE. They both run on the new Wear0S 7 and both come in wifi-only and cellular variants, but the Watch SE has been consciously designed to be cost-effective. It offers fewer features and runs on a less cutting-edge S5 chip, but that does not make it the poor person’s Apple Watch.

An Apple Watch 6 will set you back $399 whereas the Watch SE will cost you $279.

If you’re interested in an Apple Watch and it’s either your first time or you’re not sure which model to get next, we’re going to compare them for you here.

Apple watch latest model quick comparison

Apple Watch Design

Off the bat, they look incredibly similar. The Series 6 is available in more variants, though.

Both the 6 and SE offer the same display (including the same resolution), so to the eye you get the same experience. They’re both water-resistant so you can confidently take them swimming. Apple has offered users two new bands; the Solo and the Braided Solo.

The Watch 6 comes in more colour and design choices. Additionally to the usual grey, silver, gold and aluminium, the Apple Watch 6 comes in a new blue and never-before-seen red. You can opt for a steel or titanium version, of which both come in different colours.

The well-known fashion brand Hermes has teamed up with Apple to offer exclusive bands in different materials and colours for the Series 6.

The Series 6 continues the always-on feature. This was first seen on the Series 5 last year. This feature means your display is literally always on so you don’t have to flick your wrist to turn it on to check the time or your notifications.

Inside

The Apple Watch Series 6 comes with the S6 chipset; the latest from Apple. The SE, on the other hand, comes with the S5. The whole point is that the SE had to make some sacrifices to be more accessible and this is one of those elements. Users will notice that the SE isn’t as advanced as the 6. Apple did claim the SE is still twice as fast as the 2017 Series 3.

The Series 6 comes with an Ultra Wideband (also known as a U1 chip). This is what you typically see in an iPhone, starting with the 11 onward. It’s used for spacial awareness and its function is to allow devices to find other devices with accuracy, albeit within short distances. Apple said this was being used to further develop AirDrop, the service that allows an iPhone user to share things with other iPhones in close proximity. Apple teases us with their promise that this is just the beginning of what they’re planning. People have suggested that the U1 will be used for Apple’s tile tracking device, which has been rumoured for a while.

Blood Oxygen App

One huge difference between not only the Apple Watch 6 and Apple Watch SE, but all predecessors is the addition of the blood oxygen sensor. More commonly referred to as an oximeter. This will track key information about your breathing and blood circulation. Getting a reading will take exactly 15 seconds. This will give insight into your overall cardiac and respiratory health. It’s been coined the “COVID-catching watch” as blood oxygen levels can tell us how deeply this virus is affecting the body. You can read more on how smartwatches are diagnosing COVID-19 in our article.

There’s an app that accompanies the oximeter. It will continually take measurements in the background (like when you’re asleep), but you’re able to take a manual reading any time you like. The data will be shown in the Health app and you can monitor changes and trends.

Both devices have an optical heart rate sensor which will keep an eye on your heart rate. The Series 6 has the accompanying ECG app, which we saw make its debut on the Series 4. This will catch an irregular heartbeat.

Software

As we’ve said, both devices run on WearOS 7. New to this version is the Family Setup feature. This lets a user pair either device with an iPhone. This is great for people with kids or elderly relatives. You can do things like limit which contacts the watch can send messages to, apply controls over app downloads or set automatic location tracking. Breaking away from the norm for Apple, the other user doesn’t have to have an iPhone to use this feature. We wrote more on this and why it’s great for families with kids, here.
