How to Backup an Apple Watch

By Emma Morris. Updated: Feb 3, 2022

If you are an iPhone user, then the chances are you have invested in, or at least considered investing in, an Apple Watch. Apple Watch was released to provide iPhone users with a simple way to access all the important information on their iPhones without the need to constantly pick up and unlock a phone. Since the first Apple Watch was released, the demand for them has increased year on year. Unfortunately, many Apple Watch users fail to backup their watches. Leading to data loss that could be avoided. Rather than losing access to your data, check out our guide and learn more about backing up an Apple Watch.

Does My Apple Watch Backup Automatically?

Many people wrongly assume that their Apple Watch will back itself up regularly. In reality, the only way this can happen is if you already undertake regular iPhone backups, as this process also stores your Apple Watch data.

However, if you only backup your phone infrequently, your Apple Watch will also not be backed up. Forgetting to regularly backup your Apple Watch could result in you losing important information. Furthermore, if your device needs to be restored, you may need to re-download updates. And who has time to do that?

How Do I Backup My Apple Watch?

The great news is that backing up your Apple Watch is a simple and straightforward process. But before you start, you will need to make sure that your watch is paired to your iPhone so that the process can be run effectively. Once you have checked and confirmed this, you will need to follow the instructions below to start the backup process:

  • Firstly, make sure that your iPhone and Apple Watch are switched on and connected to the internet.
  • Next, go to the settings on your phone and click on your name at the top. When you are in this menu, head to the iCloud section and ensure that it is turned on.
  • When you enter the iCloud menu, click iCloud Backup and make sure that the button slides to on.
  • Once this is done, check that the Watch button has also been slid to on in the iCloud Backup section.
  • When all these steps have been undertaken, press ‘Back Up Now’ to instigate an initial backup and store all your data.

Following all these steps will result in a complete backup being undertaken. Furthermore, it will also automatically update regularly. Storing your latest backups on iCloud, ready for download if you ever need them.

If you upgrade or purchase a new Apple Watch to replace your current device, you will probably want to transfer your data. The good news is when you unpair your current device, your iPhone will instigate an immediate backup that you can use to download to your new device. If you want to use this backup, all you need to do is follow these steps:

    • Head over to your Apple Watch app
    • Click to start pairing your device
    • When offered, select restore from backup’ to download your data

You will then need to complete the setup by following the on-screen instructions, finishing with agreeing to the terms and conditions. Your watch will download and start in the same place as your old device. Meaning you can use it right away.

Will I Lose My Apple Watch Backups When I Get a New Phone?

Much like when you invest in a new Apple Watch, if you buy a new phone, all you will need to do is install the backup when prompted to during setup. Doing this will ensure that your phone looks exactly as it did on your last device and all your Apple Watch data is transferred too.

Does an Apple Watch Backup Include Everything I Have Stored?

No, your backup will not include everything. The following list covers what is not included in an Apple backup:

    • Bluetooth pairings
    • Passcodes
    • Messages
    • Financial information – such as card details

The following list covers everything that is included in an Apple backup:

    • All your app data for any built-in app that comes with the watch, such as your email app, calendar, stocks, and weather apps
    • All your app settings for both third-party apps and built-in apps
    • The layout of your home screen
    • Your time zone information
    • Your clock face selection
    • Docking settings
    • Siri settings
    • Synced photos
    • Fitness data
    • Health data
    • General settings
    • Notification settings
    • Music selections that have been synced

When you stop to consider just how much data can be saved, it makes sense to perform regular backups so that you are never left having to reapply all your settings and requirements.

Are Apple Watches a Good Investment?

If you haven’t recently upgraded or you’re still wondering if an Apple Watch is the right solution for you, then we would suggest that they are well worth some serious consideration. Aside from the fact that you can store and backup your settings, these watches come with a range of fantastic features that are sure to improve your day-to-day life – especially if you are looking for a way to focus on your health and wellbeing.

The new Apple Watch 7 has just been released and has undergone some aesthetic changes, offering a new, more sleek look. However, if you are looking for a more budget option, Series 5 and 6 are still well worth considering and will save you a lot of cash. Whatever you decide, you can be sure that investing in one of these devices will leave you impressed!
