By Emma Morris. Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Getting a new iPhone is exciting, especially if you are upgrading from a much older model. However, if you already own an Apple Watch and want to keep using it with your new device, you will need to know how to reset it and pair it again.

Rather than getting frustrated, take a look at our simple how-to guide. You’ll have your new device up and running in no time at all!

Resetting your Apple Watch

If you are selling your Apple Watch or simply want to reset it back to its original settings before you pair it to a new device, then you’ll be pleased to know that Apple has made it very simple for you! Take a look at the instructions to get started:

Head to Settings

Whether using the Apple Watch app or the Apple Watch itself, you will first need to find the settings menu and select it. When you are in settings, you will see several options to choose from.

Pick General

In your list of options, there will be a menu item named General. This is one of the first options in the list and has a cog icon next to it.

Select Reset

Once you arrive at the reset menu, you will find that you have a few different options. You can erase your watch and all the settings, reset your home screen layout, reset your sync data or remove your cellular plan. You will need to select Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings to wipe your watch and reset it. Once you have chosen this, your watch will then proceed to wipe.

What if I Just Want to Unpair my Watch?

If you do not want to wipe your Apple Watch, then you can just unpair it from your phone instead, ready to pair it to your new phone when you are ready. To do this, you will need to your Apple Watch app on your phone and tap the All Watches section to get to the tools you need. When you are in this section, click on Unpair Apple Watch, and it will do everything for you!

Transferring Your Apple Watch to Your New iPhone

When the time comes to pair your current Apple Watch with your new iPhone, you will be pleased to know that the process is not as complicated as you may have initially thought. The main reason for this is that Apple Watch does not produce backups for you to download. All your important information is stored on your iPhone.

Your Apple Watch works by syncing its information directly from your phone when you are online. It keeps itself up to date without you even noticing! When you want to move your Apple Watch to your new phone, you have two options for doing this. We have shared both methods below to help you get started.

    Method One – Automatic Setup

Many Apple customers complained that unpairing and repairing was a time-consuming task and requested that Apple offer a new method. This was delivered in the 11.2 updates with the delivery of Automatic Setup.

To use Automatic Setup effectively, make sure that both your Apple Watch and iPhone have the latest updates installed. And that you have a backup of your old iPhone ready to upload. Once your new phone is up and working, you can simply follow the onscreen instructions to get your Apple Watch working again.

Method Two – Unpairing & Repairing

If you have wiped your Apple Watch and unpaired it from your old device, then you will need to use the repairing method to get your Apple Watch up and running again. First, set up your new phone the way you want and wait for this to finish. When it is complete, open the Apple Watch App and set up your Apple Watch as a new device using the prompts on the screen.

Once you have followed all the prompts successfully, your Apple Watch and new iPhone will be successfully paired and ready to use.

    Choosing to Start from Scratch

If you have decided to take the opportunity to start your new iPhone from scratch, then you will not need to use any form of backup when installing everything. All you need to do in this situation is treat both your iPhone and Apple Watch as brand new devices. Follow the pairing instructions to get them working together.

Remember that if you choose this option, none of your previous data will be transferred either. So make sure that you want to start from ground zero again!

    Why Apple is So Great

Regardless of which option suits your situation best, you can be sure that Apple has taken the time to consider your needs as a consumer. They work hard to ensure that the process is as easy as possible. One of the many reasons why Apple is so great is because they offer an intuitive system. It’s easy to use, meaning that you are sure to be up and running again in next to no time!
