Facebook recently announced that they are changing their name to Meta. And, they would be working hard on creating a metaverse that all their subscribers can enjoy, including VR capabilities. As part of this announcement, the company also confirmed that the smartwatch rumors circulating all year are correct. And, we can expect to see this new watch sometime in 2022. We’ve dug around for as much information on this new Meta/Facebook smartwatch and shared all the rumors we’ve found. So, now you can find out exactly whether this is a watch you’d be keen to invest in!
The Famously Leaked Meta Watch Photo
Since the confirmation, more details on the watch have been leaked online. A code miner called Steve Moser went so far as to share a picture of the new watch. He is said to have found the image on the Facebook View app. An app used to support the editing of any videos and photos that have been taken with the smart glasses released by Facebook.
Interestingly, the watch is supposedly called Milan. But we don’t yet know if it is accurate or just a code name invented by the company. The picture that Moser shared via Twitter shows that the new watch has a squared face with curved edges and a large screen.
The most important info we’ve seen is that the watch also appears to boast a front-facing camera. This could be revolutionary for the smartwatch market. The common perception about this camera is that it will have the capabilities to take photos and videos that can then be shared in the Metaverse and to smartphones.
Are We Ready for a Social Media Watch?
The smartwatch market is an incredibly competitive place to be. While Meta/Facebook can jump the queue because of their global status, we are still left to question whether we need another smartwatch attempting to convince consumers that they need to buy it.
However, rather than go head to head with companies like Apple and Google, Facebook seems to be working on the position that they are offering a watch that will support social interaction through photo and video sharing capabilities.
What we are left wondering is are we ready for a social media watch? Or even if we need one or not? The video chat facility may appeal to some people who want a hands-free experience. Still, when you consider the type of camera angle you will achieve with video calling on your phone, many of us will be vain enough to avoid this new capability. Preferring to stick with our trusted phones.
What Other Features Will the New Meta Watch Offer?
While many rumors about the new watch center around whether it has a camera or not, there have been some smaller leaks and speculative comments about what else we may see when it is released.
Firstly, there has been some talk about health tracking features and supporting users to get fit. This may come in the form of a simple pedometer. Or they may take it further by offering more in-depth tracking for multiple sports. However, no rumors are stating whether the watch will be waterproof or not. Leading us to believe that you will probably need to take it off when jumping in the pool!
The New Meta/Facebook Watch Design
When rumors began circulating about the new Meta/Facebook Watch, many people focused more on the camera than digging deeper into the design. Still, we do have some information about how the watch has been put together.
Firstly, like many of the other smartwatches on the market, the new Meta/Facebook watch is said to have detachable straps. So you can switch up your look whenever it suits you. This will be good news for third-party sellers who make a fortune from replaceable watch straps every year.
The only other news we have about the design is that the watch will feature buttons on the right-hand side of the watch as well as on the top of the watch. We assume that these buttons will be instrumental in users navigating the watch. But they could also be used for the camera settings to make calling others and taking photos simple.
In terms of other design features, it’s clear that the company will make us wait a bit longer to share more!
Can You Trust Facebook with Your Information?
If the watch offers a range of tracking facilities, then there is little doubt that it will also ask you to share your health data and your basic details to give you the right feedback about how you are progressing.
Unfortunately, Facebook has been heavily criticized over the years for its poor handling of sensitive data. Previously experiencing leaks that went on to be shared when it should not. This issue will require the company to provide additional assurance. They have to ensure that anything shared with the watch will be safe, secure and kept private.
Will the Meta/Facebook Watch be Worth Buying?
In reality, it is still too early to tell whether the Meta/Facebook smartwatch will be worth investing in or not. If you love social media and want to have a new way to reach your friends without using your phone, you will probably be interested in what it has to offer when it is officially launched.
However, if you are not keen on being updated on everyone’s lives during your day, then you may be better off sticking with one of the other brands instead.
As soon as we know more, we will share it with you. And provide you with an honest overview of whether you should invest or not!
