Surfing is one of the most attractive water sports to enjoy. However, we know that for every wave you catch, there’s a lot you miss. Having access to a surf watch helps you achieve more every time you head out on the water. Take a look at some of the most highly rated surf watches below:
The Important Features for Surf Watches
Unlike everyday use, surfers need access to specific tools to help them improve their sports. Being able to track your waves via GPS and surf times are both useful tools. Plus, when you want to improve performance, your watch tracks efforts and shows you where you need to make improvements.
Garmin Instinct 2 Surf Edition
Garmin’s Instinct 2 builds off of the impressive original model by offering durability, seemingly endless fitness tracking functions, and reliable GPS tracking. Their Instinct 2 Surf is available in both a 45mm (Black colour options) and 40mm case size (white colour option). Garmin also lets you choose between a Solar or non-Solar edition. But if you’re after a watersport smartwatch, then solar might be optimal. It simply means you’ll never need to worry about your watch battery and its lifespan!
And when you compare the Instinct 2 Surf to other Garmin GPS smartwatches, the price seems a little low. It does lack a few features when compared to other Garmin models, however they make up for that in specific surf features. This smartwatch allows you to track surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding activities while also providing you with tide data and ocean data.
Rip Curl GPS 2 Surf Watch
If you want a watch that’s ONLY for surfing, then the Rip Curl GPS 2 is a good choice. It has excellent tools like swell reports to wind tracking in real-time and GOS to tidal data.
The device supports your journey to become a better surfer and connects it to your smartwatch. So, a poor choice if you want an all-in-one watch solution. However, it may be worth considering as it will help you become the best possible surfer you can be.
Casio Frogman G-Shock
If you are looking for something more technical, then Casio is the maker to choose. The Frogman G-Shock looks rugged and handles anything Mother Nature throws at it. The watch comes with a tide graph and has a solar battery that will recharge. The watch also has a ten-month power reserve, so you’re never stranded.
In addition to providing excellent surf support, the Frogman provides all the other features you’d expect from Casio – a timer, stopwatch, world clock, calendar, and alarm functions. It also has a backlight for easy reading, making it accessible even in the water. There is no doubt that the Casio G-Shock range is good and makes an excellent present for any surf fan.
Nixon Base Tide Pro
When the Nixon Base Tide Pro was released, we expected to see some great upgrades from the original design. Unfortunately, the two watches are more alike than we expected, offering the same simple interface that offers some important information clearly.
Some of the newest features include over 500 beaches programmed into the watch for your usage. It can also tell you pertinent information such as tide time and sunrise and sunset times. In addition, you can use it to set alarms and see the display from the backlight installed on the device. It’s a good choice for anyone on a budget, but it’s not our favorite choice.
Apple Watch Series 7
If you prefer a well-rounded watch that you can wear at all times, including surfing, then the Apple Watch Series 7 is a logical choice. Made to support your iPhone to provide you with all your notifications and calls, this watch can do so much more to help you too. Each Apple Watch comes with its own App Store, where you can download the apps Surf Watch and Dawn Patrol. These apps make your watch into the ideal surfing companion and will help you measure and record your moves as well as helping you to decide when the best time is to head out to sea.
When your surf is over, you can use the watch to navigate your way home and see all the calls and notifications you missed when you were surfing. The Apple Watch comes with a water lock tool that disables your touchscreen and prevents water from getting into your device. We love the versatility on offer with this device and think that it is well worth consideration.
