Is work really underway on a Facebook Watch? Is Apple facing a new competitor in the smartwatch world? Since Facebook has declined to comment to any media source on the subject, this is very much rumour. Yet, the initial report from The Information said their source was from “people with direct knowledge of the device”.
What do the rumours say?
The leaked information reports that Facebook is working on a new smartwatch to release in 2022. With a focus on social features and health.
Facebook Watch Design
Joining the smartwatch giants such as Apple and Samsung, the rumour surrounding the smartwatches connectivity expects it to be a standalone device. This requires no connection to a smartphone; instead, the device connects to cellular networks. Furthermore, an Android-based device is expected. However, a further rumour suggests Facebook may also be working on its own operating system.
Regarding the watch’s look, there is no information at all. Due to the Apple Watch design’s popularity, we could make an educated guess that the Facebook Watch would take on some of the same design aspects.
Facebook Watch Features
Unsurprisingly, the Facebook Watch would focus on social features. Giving users the ability to use and send messages through Facebook and their other apps such as WhatsApp and Instagram. Regarding other features of the device, a focus on health is likely. With the user having the ability to track workouts, share them with friends and even their trainer.
There are further hints that the watch will also integrate with other fitness companies such as Peloton Interactive.
Concerns
It’s no secret; there have been various concerns about user data privacy on Facebook and associated apps. Facebook will likely have to do some work to reassure consumers that their data is safe and used appropriately before launching a smartwatch onto the market.
Facebook also have somewhat of a rocky history with hardware. The Facebook phone lasted just one month before removed from sale. The Facebook Portal did not get off to the best start for sales until the pandemic hit, at which point the Portal flew off shelves and sold out. More recently, the Facebook Oculus has sold well, and work is already underway on the next version.
