Is A WatchOS 9 Upgrade On The Way?

By Isobel Coughlan. Updated: May 3, 2022

We’re expecting an Apple release before the end of 2022, and watchOS 9 is on the list of expected releases.

As you may know, smartwatch brands are constantly working on new projects behind the scenes, so there’s always something new to look forward to. From watchOS 9 to the Apple Watch Series 8, we’re expecting big things from the brand.

Find out what we know about the potential watchOS 9 here! Keep reading to learn more.

Why WatchOS 9?

No technology is perfect, and often users find bugs or features that need improving. Though the current watchOS system is excellent, some tweaks could be done to bring it to the next level.

WatchOS 9 rumors started with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He hinted toward possible software upgrades and new wearables in the fall months, news that excited all Apple fans.

The critical rumor from Gurman is that the new software could allow Apple watches to “run some apps and features without using as much battery life” on a new and improved low power mode. This is excellent news, primarily since Apple Watches are known for having shorter battery lives.

What Is WatchOS?

Wondering what watchOS is? We’ve got your back!

WatchOS refers to the operating system of the Apple Watch range. This software is similar to the systems used on the iPod ranges and iPhones, keeping Apple’s tech similar and compatible.

Currently, watchOS 8 is the latest version of this software. Released on September 19th, 2021, this software isn’t even a year old. But, tech moves fast, and there’s always a new option on the horizon.

What Alternatives Are There?

When it comes to smartwatch operating systems, wearOS’s biggest competitor is the Android WearOS software. Google owns this system, and it powers a range of watches, including:

  • Fossil Gen 6
  • TicWatch
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

You might notice Fitbit is missing from this list. Though many smartwatch fans expected the fitness tracker brand to switch to WearOS, they still use an independent operating system. Perhaps in the future, we’ll see them running on WearOS. Only time will tell.

Apple 2022 Releases

WearOS 9 is one of the expected 2022 releases for Apple, but what else is on their radar?

A key expectation from the Californian brand is the Apple Watch Series 8. Though it may seem like the Series 7 model just came out. Fans are already looking to the future for the next installment in this range.

Potential features include:

  • Fertility planning
  • Skin temperature sensors
  • Improved heart trackers
  • Blood glucose monitors
  • & more!

We’re always excited for new watch releases, so we’re keeping an eye out for any updates on this potential watch.

Final Thoughts

Though there aren’t any official release dates yet, we’re closely watching the latest news and launches. It’s an exciting era for all smartwatch tech, so make sure you stay up to date to enjoy the latest releases too!
