Where Seiko Began
In 1881, Kintaro Hattori opened a Tokyo-based watch shop that produced watches and clocks under the Seikosha name. It was this shop that, in 1924, became the Seiko brand that we all know today.
In 1969, Seiko released a quartz wristwatch that became one of their most sought-after timepieces by watch collectors. Later, this watch style became affordable for everyone, marking a significant step forward in watch history.
Despite the ongoing competition from watchmakers worldwide, Seiko is still one of the most trusted brands.
The Citizen History
With more modern roots, Citizen was founded in 1930 with investment support from Swiss and Japanese investors. The main goal of the company has been to create watches that are sustainable and innovative.
Along with solar-powered options, Citizen has also created atomic watches that will only lose less than a full second over 100,000 years. This makes them more reliable than quartz watches.
Citizen’s success has enabled them to become one of the largest watchmakers in the world. Even though they make most of their products in their Japanese home, they can claim that they are Swiss-made because of the movement they install in their watches.
So, Who is Better? Seiko or Citizen
Despite some clear similarities, it is almost impossible to compare the two brands side by side. This is because they have watches in their portfolio that offer different features, styles, and pricing structures.
The other reason that it is so hard to compare them is that different consumers are looking for different things. Selecting the brand that suits you best is dependent on what you want. One good example of this is that Seiko offers a large number of mechanical watches, whereas Citizen’s catalogue has more Quartz options.
Interestingly, Seiko offers a more classic watch, and Citizen chooses to head down the experimental route, finding new and innovative ways to appeal to watch lovers. If you want to base the answer on results, Citizen does make more sales per year than Seiko. However, the margin of difference is not large enough to declare Citizen an outright winner.
