Fitbit Update Adds Atrial Fibrillation Notifications

By Isobel Coughlan. Updated: Apr 28, 2022

Fitbit is always one of the leading fitness bands, and now they’re also offering atrial fibrillation notifications.

Many smartwatches offer heart rate tracking or ECG monitors, but atrial fibrillation notifications are the next significant innovation for heart health. These notifications tell wearers when their heart starts beating irregularly. Not only does this help wearers monitor their symptoms, but it will also help to diagnose issues too!

Want to know more about this exciting development? Keep on reading. We’ve got all you need to know from the devices that will receive this update to heart health alternatives.

What Is Atrial Fibrillation?

You may know what a heart rate monitor is, but do you know what atrial fibrillation is? Don’t worry if not! This is a very new feature for the smartwatch market.

Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that can cause irregular heartbeats or an abnormally fast heartbeat. Symptoms can include dizziness, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath.

While some may notice their symptoms, some sufferers don’t. Smartwatches with tech that recognizes irregular heartbeats may help users identify their condition and treat it.

Which Fitbit Devices Will Receive This Update?

This feature has received FDA approval, meaning it’s time to roll it out! Unfortunately, it’s only available in the U.S., but keep watching for more news.

Atrial fibrillation notifications will be available via a software update, and Fitbit plans to roll this out to nine models. These include the Charge range (3, 4 & 5), Inspire 2, Luxe, Sense, and the Versa (2, 3 & Lite).

This update is reported to start on the 25th of April. Users will need to update their software, and many should note that it could take a couple of weeks for this update to appear.

Can Other Wearable Measure Heart Health?

If you’re interested in measuring your heart health via your watch, we have some good news. Nearly all wearable devices offer some form of heart rate tracking, and it’s seen as a necessary feature these days.

Of course, some models are more accurate than others! If you’re considering a new wearable to improve your health, here are some popular options.

  • Garmin Fenix 7 – The latest launch in the popular Fenix range, the Fenix 7 is an impressive sports-based smartwatch. This remarkable watch offers a range of health features, including all modern heart monitors.
  • Apple Watch 7 – If you want a watch that provides health and fitness tools alongside a sleek design and iPhone compatibility, this might be your wearable. The Apple Watch 7 includes heart rate tracking and ECG scans.
  • Fitbit Charge 5 – If you can’t get enough of working out, the Fitbit Charge 5 is a great option. This wearable offers all current fitness and health tools. Plus, if you’re in the U.S., you’ll be able to access atrial fibrillation notifications.
