Released in 23rd of September 2022, the Apple Watch Ultra is the ultimate in Apple Watches currently.
But, what is this brand-new smartwatch, and how does it differ from the standard Apple watch range? While we’ve predicted a new ‘rugged’ Apple wearable for a while, the new smartwatch is finally here and different from our expectations. What is most interesting for Apple naysayers is that it will now last up to 36 hours – double the 18-hour standard time of previous generations. And, with the power save mode, the battery will last up to 60 hours. This is none other than a revolution in the world of Apple Watches.
The Apple Watch Ultra is described as a ‘versatile watch that empowers users to push their skills during adventure, endurance, and exploration.’ If you’re keen on outdoor sports and pushing your limits, this might be the watch for you.
We’re delving into the new smartwatch and its high-quality features to keep you in the loop.
Design Changes
Apple tends to play it safe when it comes to smartwatch design. We haven’t seen any major changes in a while, including on the new Apple Watch 8. However, the Apple Watch Ultra provides a whole new look for those after a more rugged watch.
This watch comes in a large 49mm size with a clear display to match. The watch also boasts a new side ‘Action’ button, which connects users to interactive workouts. The design also features an extra protrusion to protect the digital crown.
Alongside a re-imagined look, the watch can be paired with three new straps. These include the Alpine Loop, the Trail Loop, and the Ocean Band. Each is optimized for its specific sport, ensuring the watch is secure and durable no matter where you are.
The design of this watch is much more industrial and less sleek. But, if you’re after a ‘rugged’ watch, that’s exactly what you want!
Durability Features
The Apple Watch Ultra was known as a durable watch, even before its official release. But what features set it apart from standard smartwatches?
Unlike other Apple Watches, this model is water resistant to 100m and swim-proof. It can also withstand recreational diving to 40m, and the Ocean Band is designed to accompany this activity. This is the best swim-proofing we’ve seen in a while.
The watch also boasts a depth gauge and water temperature sensor for diving and swimming, features not available on other Apple Watches. To complete the dive package, the Apple Watch Ultra is even EN13319 certified. This certification proves the watch’s ability to survive beneath water pressure.
But, this wearable isn’t only durable underwater.
The Apple Watch Ultra is certified IP6X dust resistant and tested to MIL-STD 810H. This means it can withstand difficult environmental conditions – ideal for hikers and mountaineers. This is a military standard of testing.
Alongside these environmental features, the watch also features an always-on retina display of up to 2,000 nits. This means users will be able to read the large display clearly in all lights, including darkness.
Fitness & Health Features
This wearable is optimized for premium durability, but don’t let that distract you from its excellent health and fitness tools.
The Apple Watch Ultra includes in-demand monitors, including bloody oxygen sensors, an ECG app, and all-new temperature sensors. Users can also receive irregular rhythm notifications, high/low heart notifications, and cardio fitness notifications.
The new temperature sensing can be linked to the watch’s Cycle Tracking. This allows women to improve their menstrual cycle data with ovulation estimates from the watch’s body temperature data.
Apple’s popular activity rings and workouts are also available on this watch. Perfect for tracking your progress or competing with friends.
New workout features include:
- Running form
- Running power
- Heart Rate Zones
These new workout additions allow you to improve your progress with helpful data. Stride length, ground contact time, and vertical oscillation are new metrics designed to help you reach your personal best.
Additional Smartwatch Features
What else does the new Apple Watch Ultra offer?
Users can find:
- Emergency SOS and international emergency calling tools

What’s The Price?
As you may have guessed, these top-of-the-line features aren’t available for a low-cost price.
The Apple Watch Ultra sits at a premium price point of $799.
Though this is a higher price for a smartwatch, all options are cellular. This allows you to call friends and receive messages from your wrist, even when not connected to Wi-Fi.
