New Wireless AirTag Health Monitoring From Apple

By Isobel Coughlan. Updated: Mar 21, 2022

Would you wear a wireless AirTag that gives you reliable and real-time health information?

Apple AirTag

Well, you might be able to soon!

Apple has recently applied for a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which hints at a new AirTag device. This exciting news means we could be recording our fitness information without wires very soon.

The Apple patent can be viewed under application number 20220079521, but keep reading if you want to save time. We’ve got all the information you need to know now!

Key Predictions For The Next AirTag

We expect this invention to be an AirTag that can connect with your iPhone or Apple Watch for wireless fitness monitoring. Unlike traditional fitness trackers, the AirTag will be worn by adhesives or clips, allowing for a lightweight and flexible experience.

Though no news is certain, the Apple patent hints at the features this wearable device will offer.

The top features we’re expecting include:

  • Typical health sensor metrics include heart rate, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and SpO2.
  • Pedometer functions and distance traveled.
  • Possible sports modes, such as cycling or running.

Exciting New Features

Sources also predict new features such as sun exposure monitors or posture sensors.

If the AirTag is to monitor these new metrics, you’ll likely need to wear more than one for the device to get a complete idea of your body. However, as seen with previous AirTag designs, these wearables are lightweight and won’t stop you from partaking in any exercises.

Sun exposure predictors already exist, and these are activated by shaking to check the current UV intensity. We can imagine the next AirTags will also clip onto your clothes and send frequent UV updates to your smart device to keep you up to date on the latest sun exposure readings.

It’s also likely that the AirTags will need a range of sensors to achieve reliable data. These could include motion sensors, temperature, humidity, and electrocardiogram sensors.

How Will The AirTags Work?

We expect the next generation of AirTags to act wirelessly, giving wearable fans newfound freedom. While many smartwatches are already streamlined and lightweight, we hope Apple will take this concept to a new level with clip-on AirTags.

The current AirTag device helps you find your keys when you misplace them. The next generation may use the same wireless tech to connect to your phone or watch, but it will send your biometrics and fitness data instead of location details.

Are There Any Alternatives?

If you’re curious about health tracking and wearable sensors, you might want to try the Apple Watch before this design is released. The Apple Watch Series 7 currently sits at approximately $600. However, you can spend less on previous editions and the SE model.

Current AirTag prices are $29 for one and $99 for a four-pack. But, we expect these prices to skyrocket if the next generation is launched with state-of-the-art sensors and trackers.

Other essential fitness watches to try before the next AirTags are released include:

  • Fitbit Charge 5
  • The Garmin Forerunner Range
  • Mi Band 6

The Bottom Line

Whether you want to workout without your phone or perhaps you want new posture or sun exposure data, this is a patent to watch. Apple is a leader in the industry, giving us high expectations for this new design.
