Do you ever wish you could catch your stress before it ruins your mood?
Well, Fitbit might be able to help soon.
It’s rumored that Fitbit is working on a new way to track stress levels. This will revolutionize on-wrist technology, and it will likely save many of us from stress-filled days.
Keep reading to explore what we know already.
A New Patent
Rumors and predictions about this new stress-tracking feature stem from a patent filed by Fitbit.
On the 24th of February, Fitbit filed a patent for a new feature to the US Patent and Trademark Office. This document discusses a new “Detection and Response to Arousal Activations feature.”
Exciting news for anyone that loves wearable health technology.
How Will It Work?
It seems that this new patent focuses on sensors that track bodily changes. Whether it will use multiple individual sensors, we don’t know. But, it’s likely to use both ECG and EDA features as these are already offered on the Fitbit Charge 5.
The patent continues to explain that sensors will continuously monitor sympathetic nervous responses to an “arousal event or activation.” Over time, the device will detect patterns in these events, and it will be able to provide information when signs of a reaction appear.
In simple terms – the new feature will recognize you getting stressed before you are stressed.
This is a game-changing move. Fitbit users will avoid large stress attacks and physical health conditions. It’s often reported that stress is a leading cause of illness, so catching and reducing stress will save users’ health in the long run.
What Do The Current Fitbits Offer?
Developments of stress features aren’t surprising, especially when you remember that Fitbit already offers a range of stress-management tools.
Current Fitbits offer EDA sensors. This feature shows your body’s stress response using a multi-path sensor. This sensor can detect small electrical changes (electrodermal activity) on your skin. Using this data, the wearable can offer real-time stress insights.
Fitbit also provides a Stress Management Score. This daily number represents your physical stress symptoms, and the number ranges from 1 to 100. A higher number shows that you’re calmer.
If users own Fitbit Premium, they can see an in-depth breakdown of the Stress Management Score. Metrics used for this feature include exertion balance, sleeping patterns, and responsiveness.
Alongside stress monitors, Fitbit also provides Reflections. This modern feature acts as a diary to input how you’re feeling emotionally. Entries range from Very Calm to Very Stressed, allowing you to combine your emotional and physical data for a complete picture of your health. Ideal for those who want to work on their physical fitness and mental well-being simultaneously.

The Bottom Line
Though this is an exciting potential feature, it’s important to note that many patents get filed, but they don’t always make it onto the final device. We hope to see this technology on Fitbit’s next release, but we’ll have to wait and see for now!
