How to use WhatsApp on your Apple Watch

By Scott Anfield. Updated: Feb 26, 2023

The Apple Watch, adored by many for its sleek look, is the ultimate tech accessory to have on your wrist. Its efficient technology mirrors your iPhone screen and notifies you of incoming notifications from various apps, including IMessage and WhatsApp. It is no longer necessary to take your phone out of your pocket, and there is no longer any need to be checking for incoming messages. Instead, you can rely entirely on the smartwatch at your wrist, which lets you know in real-time of incoming notifications. This is great when taking out a phone may be unpractical or perhaps even impolite. A discrete glance to your wrist will go unseen and can be done rapidly. When your hands aren’t free, Apple’s smartwatch will be a lifesaver!

From the watch’s clever little screen, it is even possible to attend directly to your notifications. You will know what is coming through instantly and can turn your focus to those requiring your immediate attention. Quite simply, the smart Apple Watch offers a level of ease and comfort that is unparalleled and easy to use.

For avid users of WhatsApp, the Apple Watch is a great tool to have. Indeed, the ability you have to connect the app directly to the watch is extremely handy. Moreover, the smartwatch allows you to reply directly to messages without going through your phone. From the tip of your fingers, you can give a quick response on WhatsApp through your smart Apple Watch.

How to Set Up and Use WhatsApp

You may be wondering how to set up and use WhatsApp on your Apple Watch. After reading through the practical benefits of connecting the app to your Apple Watch, this is only normal. Luckily, getting the connection set up between the app and the smartwatch is straightforward. There are just a few simple steps to follow, which in just under two minutes, will enable you to have your messages connected directly to your wrist. To begin the set-up process, you will need to get a hold of your iPhone. From there, follow the simple steps detailed below…

  • Open the settings of your connected Apple Watch. Once opened up, you will see the full list of applications downloaded on your iPhone which are supported by the Apple Watch.
  • Next, you will want to select the WhatsApp application icon, and simply allow notifications to be mirrored onto the watch. This is done by clicking the switch icon positioned to the right-hand side of the application name and icon. Ensure it is showing green.
  • Doing so will automatically connect your WhatsApp communications to your Apple Watch. The notifications you receive will begin to come through as they do on your iPhone!

WhatsApp Limitations

However, please note, the Apple Watch does not mirror all features of the classic WhatsApp application. Indeed, there are a few differences worth noting when comparing the app’s functionalities with those found on the phone version. A key point to keep in mind is that due to the small screen size of the Apple Watch, it is not possible to type freely from a keyboard as it is on an iPhone. When message notifications come through, you will be able to reply to them with pre-set short messages and sentences. Responses such as ‘okay’, ‘thank you’ or ‘on my way’ are just some examples of the short but efficient replies you will be able to send via your smartwatch. To do so, you will simply need to click the reply icon that will appear above a received message on your Apple Watch’s small screen.

However, this was changed with the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 8.

This new release has an upgraded version of the watch with slight rounder and softer corners. The battery life of the Series 8 remains unchanged and sits at 18 hours. However, the charging speed has been enhanced and is now 33% quicker. As well as this, the new big change is the full QWERTY keyboard available on the small screen. This new feature will allow you to type freely, which has not been the case in previous models as described above.

Upgrades

Whether you are planning on acquiring the new Apple Watch Series 8 or using an older model, WhatsApp has another great feature. The WhatsApp Watch application has the option to use voice messaging. We are not referring to the recording of voice notes, as can be done in the iPhone version of the app. Instead, the watch offers the option for you to talk back to a message that arrives via WhatsApp. It then can transcribe these into a written message. There is no typing on the small screen at all, making it a practical feature to use.

Conclusion

Once WhatsApp is set up on your Apple Watch, you will realize just how simple it is to use, and it will quickly become second nature. Anytime a message or call comes through, you will recognize the soft buzz on your wrist, seamlessly alerting you of the notification. Enjoy the simplicity!
