The New Fitbit Sense 2 – what to expect

By Emma Morris. Updated: Feb 3, 2022

There is no denying the original Fitbit Sense failed to make the instant sales the company hoped for on release. There were many reasons for this, including a confused audience and an overcrowded market. But when people got to grips with what it had to offer, it really took hold, and sales came pouring in. Can we expect a Fitbit Sense 2 following the success of the original Sense? Find out more about what may be on the cards right now!

Is There an Official Announcement for the Fitbit Sense 2?

In short, there has not yet been an announcement from Fitbit. 2020 saw the release of the original Fitbit Sense. Therefore, we expect an announcement of the Fitbit Sense 2 shortly, in line with the two-year release program that Fitbit offers.

There is also confusion around whether the new Sense 2 will come with a totally new name as Google looks to stamp their authority over the new brand, especially with the more expensive watches on offer. Regardless of the name, we are pretty sure that a new high-spec smartwatch release is imminent.

How Much Will the New Fitbit Cost?

One of the areas that consumers are always keen to learn about is pricing and whether they can afford to purchase the latest device. Fitbit is unapologetic about the pricing for the current Sense. It is their most iconic watch to date, packed with tons of high-end features. With this in mind, we can be pretty confident that the newest Sense 2 will be an expensive option for consumers. But one that is worth spending a bit extra on.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 - What We Expect

There are some notions that the Sense 2 will come in different sizes or be released with a standard and LTE version to choose from. Helping the consumer get the features they want and remain within budget. However, Fitbit doesn’t generally opt to do this. Although, with the new Google management, this could be an area that is easy to change.

Some sources believe the Sense 2 will come in different sizes or be released with a standard and LTE version to choose from

What Will the New Fitbit Look Like?

Fitbit is a tried and trusted brand that tends to stick to similar designs so that consumers feel safe when they purchase. With this in mind, we don’t expect a vast difference in the new device compared to the older version.

One area that may change is that the current Fitbit Sense is often confused with the Versa. So there could potentially be a push to make it more unique and set it apart as the flagship device. Whatever the company decides to do, we expect a sleek design with soft edges and a strap that offers comfort over capability.

What Operating System Will the New Fitbit Sense 2 Offer?

One of the most speculated decisions is whether Fitbit will stick with FitbitOS or opt for Wear OS in their new devices. The Fitbit system is the standard choice for all current models. However, it does come with some niggles that put people off from buying the more expensive models.

There was a previous announcement from the new CEO that when a new premium Fitbit is released, it will have Wear OS. But as there has been no clarity over which device he was referring to, we are still unsure whether the Sense 2 will be given this capability. If the Sense 2 does come with Wear OS, then the scope for better apps and better functionality with things like music playback will undoubtedly make it a popular consumer choice.

What Features Will the New Fitbit Sense 2 Offer?

Investing in a new smartwatch is often a decision based on the new features that the company offers, which is certainly true for Fitbit. To impress a consumer, the company will need to provide a range of impressive features.

Some of the features we expect to see include all the ones currently on offer with the Sense. These include the heart rate sensor, Sp02 monitor, EDA, and skin temp. The new device should also come with contactless payment options and keep the GPS function already available. This extensive list does leave us wondering what Fitbit can actually add to make a new device tempting?

As the competition between brands narrows, we are pretty sure that they will be looking to Garmin and Apple and replicating some of the most popular features like fall detection, map software, and on-device workout options. We also expect it to offer a call feature and better notifications – capable of responding from the wrist.

We also know Fitbit is looking at the possibility of monitoring glucose levels following its partnership with LifeScan.

Should I Wait for the Fitbit Sense 2 or Swap to Apple or Garmin?

If you are a long-term fan of Fitbit, but you want to access better and smarter features, then you will probably have considered defecting to another brand plenty of times. Especially when you have to pay a premium to access all the additional app features.

However, before you jump ship, stick around see if the Fitbit Sense 2 is worth waiting for. The Google takeover is sure to have a big impact on the way Fitbit works and what they offer to consumers.

Wear OS and a fully free companion app could just make the wait worth it. However, if you need something new right now, shopping around is going to be best as the Fitbit Sense 2 has yet to make an appearance. As soon as we have more information, we will be sharing it!

Why not look at the Fitbit Charge 5, or if you need a great all-around smartwatch, see how Fitbit compares to the Apple Watch.
