By Emma Morris. Updated: Feb 3, 2022

The latest, Android-based wearable for kids, The XGO2 Smartwatchbecame available in the UK yesterday (14th March 2021).

XGO2 smartwatch for kids

Created by popular Norwegian smartwatch company, Xplora, this wearable is full of safety features. It is fully GDPR compliant and great fun for kids. Here’s everything you need to know.

XGO2 design

The XGO2 is designed for children aged 5-12 years and is available in black, blue, green, and pink. So there should be a color for every child to choose from. It is light at 60g, making it ideal for wearing all day. Furthermore, it has a 1.4-inch color LCD touch screen and 240 x 240 resolution. Children can see it clearly and interact with the many features easily.

Unfortunately, the XGO2 is not suitable for swimming. However, with an IP67 rating, it will withstand a rainy day and those inevitable splashes.

XGO2 safety features

The safety features of the XGO2 are fantastic. With the free app, parents have complete control whilst still giving their children a level of freedom. 2G, 3G, 4G, and Wifi connectivity enables the user to make and receive phone calls and text messages. Kids can then respond using either text, emojis, or images. However, the parent app allows carers to control the numbers that can be contacted. So you can be sure your child can only reach the numbers you set in the app. There are also no social media functions on the watch.

With in-built GPS, parents can track their child’s location and even set safety zones around home or school. If the child leaves that safety zone. notification and the child’s location is sent to the parent. If the child needs help or needs to contact their carer urgently whilst they are out, the watch also features an SOS button. This will call the primary contact and send them the child’s location. Furthermore, the school mode allows parents to turn off all features during school hours. This reduces distractions during class, leaving just the clock visible. However, the GPS tracking and SOS button are still active.

XG02 fitness features

The XGO2 focuses on motivating kids to move more. This is achieved through gamification and making moving fun. The built-in step counter encourages the user to move more and earn rewards for the more steps they take.

For every 1000 steps taken, kids earn 1 Xplora Coin. These coins are used on the Xplora Goplay platform and exchanged for virtual rewards and online game time. Xplora are continually improving rewards through their gaming platform. Announcing partnerships with characters such as Tom & Jerry and Peter Rabbit. Adding to their partnerships with Sony Playstation and Paramount Pictures. Users that make it into the Top 3 leaderboard can win exclusive prizes.

Research undertaken by Xplora shows that children engaging with the Goplay platform take up to 300% more steps than those that don’t.

Other features

There are a few more features available, these include:

  • 0.3-megapixel camera with 4GB storage space
  • Torch
  • Schedule
  • Alarm
  • Stopwatch

The battery life isn’t bad, 72 hours in standby mode. As always, this depends on the usage and uses contactless, magnetic charging.

Conclusion

The XGO2 seems an excellent wearable for children. Moreover, at less than £100, it is undoubtedly well priced for the features included. Many watches for kids focus on fitness or safety, whereas this delivers both. If you are a parent that wants to encourage your child to move more whilst having fun, then this is definitely a watch to be considered.

Availability in the US is currently unknown, however, we will keep you updated.
