If you’re ready to buy a new fitness tracker, two of the options you could consider are the Fitbit Versa 3 or Versa 2. Both offer impressive features, so how do you choose between them?
Although the Fitbit Versa 2 isn’t as new as the Versa 3, it still offers a host of modern features, including support for Amazon Alexa, music streaming capabilities, blood oxygen saturation tracking, and NFC contactless payment technology.
As an added advantage, the Versa 2 also offers a feature that the Versa 3 doesn’t – onboard music storage. And since it’s cheaper, it could be a better choice, especially if you’re on a tight budget. On the other side, though, the Fitbit Versa 3 comes with onboard GPS. This means its results are more accurate than those delivered by the Versa 2 since it requires your phone to track your location.
It’s clear, then, that both devices have plenty to offer the buyer. So here, we compare the two so that you can determine which is the right choice for your needs.
Which Device Has The Best Design?
Both the Versa 2 and 3 have a similar design. Their basic shape is the same, and both are made from the same materials. Still, the lines of the Versa 3 are more modern, and some newer design principles have been introduced for the Fitbit Versa 3. It uses curving shapes that take inspiration from the human body, giving it a more contemporary appearance.

Both versions have a polymer case, a soft silicone band, and an aluminum bezel. But, there is also a special edition of the Versa 2, which comes with an additional jacquard woven band.
Both versions come supplied with two bands – a large and a small – and both are compatible with alternatives if you want to purchase them separately and switch them out.
Three colors are available for the Versa 2:
- Black and carbon aluminum
- Stone and mist grey aluminum
- Petal and copper rose aluminum
Meanwhile, there are 5 color options for the Versa 3:
- Midnight and soft gold aluminum
- Black and black aluminum
- Pink clay and soft gold aluminum
- Thistle and soft gold aluminum
- Olive and soft gold aluminum
Do Both Devices Have A Similar Display?
Both the Versa 2 and 3 have a square AMOLED display with round corners, although the resolution of the Versa 3 is higher. While the Versa 2 comes with a 300×300 pixel resolution, the Versa 3’s is 336×336 pixels, allowing sharper graphics, more text, and detailed graphs to be displayed with ease/
The Fitness And Health Features
While both devices have an integrated SpO2 sensor that operates while you’re sleeping (unlike other devices that allow you to spot-check your blood oxygen saturation levels at any given time), only the Versa 3 comes with its own onboard GPS and breathing exercises built in. The onboard GPS is a significant difference since the Versa 2 requires your phone to be close at hand so its GPS receiver can be used.
As a result, you can run, ride and walk without taking your phone along with you and still track your speed, distance and route during your workout if you opt for the Versa 3. It’s also worth noting that watches with onboard GPS usually give a more accurate result than those relying on smartphone connections. So if you’re in training for a 10K or 5K event, the Versa 3 may be a better option.
Both devices track your heart rate 24/7 and your daily step count. They also offer more than 20 different workout modes and auto-track. This kicks in if your watch detects you’ve begun your workout and haven’t launched tracking manually.
Furthermore, both devices also monitor sleep quality and patterns, as well as your breathing rate. However, the Versa 3 has its own pre-installed app offering guided breathing sessions, whereas the Versa 2 does not. The inbuild SpO2 sensor operates during your sleep, too. This can help to detect signs of medical conditions such as sleep apnea, producing reports which can be shared with your doctor.
Music Control
In terms of music control, there are also significant differences. Both watches enable you to use your Fitbit to control your chosen Spotify playlist (as long as you’re subscribed to Spotify Premium, of course). However, the Versa 3 can also support Deezer streaming. This makes it the best device for you if Deezer is your music program of choice.
But the Versa 3 offers no onboard song storage. In contrast, the Versa 2 is equipped with onboard storage for as many as 300 songs. So if you aren’t subscribed to any music streaming services but still want to control music from your wrist, the Versa 2 could be the right smartwatch for your needs.

The Smartwatch Features
The Versa 3 and Versa 2 have some significant differences in their smartwatch features. Depending on your requirements, these may make one device or the other a more attractive option.
While both devices support Amazon Alexa, the Versa 2 can also be used with Google Assistant. That may make this older device a better choice if your home is equipped with Google Home’s smart devices.
If you want to receive phone calls from your device, the Versa 3 is a better choice. It allows you to send your callers to your voicemail service if you’re busy working out so long as your phone is within the device’s Bluetooth range.
Both the Versa 2 and 3 can receive app notifications as well as support contactless payments via Fitbit Pay. Still, you’ll need to check in advance whether your bank is supported. Google Pay and Apple Pay are supported much more widely.
For both watches, more apps can be downloaded via Fitbit’s app store. This can be accessed via the app on your smartphone.
Essentially, there are pros and cons to both devices. So you need to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages to select the optimal device for you.
