It may seem strange, but when it comes to turning off your Fitbit, you might find that it isn’t as straightforward as you may have imagined. Most people believe that all they need to do is press a button to turn off their fitness tracker or smartwatch device, but that isn’t always the case. It can be much more complex than you thought to get your device to shut down.
Learning how to turn off your Fitbit may not always be necessary due to the recent improvements that have been made in the device’s battery lifespan. However, it’s still a good idea to know how to accomplish it, just in case.
Before you become too frustrated by your inability to get your smartwatch to shut down, it’s essential to understand that not all Fitbits can be turned off. For example, the Inspire and Charge models cannot be shut down. So here, we take a closer look at which Fitbit devices can be turned off and how you can reboot each one.
The Fitbit Charge Versions 2, 3 And 4
It isn’t possible to turn off your Fitbit Charge, whether you have version 2, 3, or 4. So if you were annoyed by being unable to find a way to switch your device off, it’s time to let go of that frustration!
While none of the Charges can be turned off, they can all be rebooted. That means your Charge device will only turn off and remain off if it has run out of battery life. Still, it can be shut down temporarily and restarted by rebooting it.
You can reboot your Fitbit Charge 2, 3, or 4 by following these simple steps:
- Swipe your screen until you reach the Settings menu.
- Hit the tab labeled “Reboot Device.”
- If your tracker doesn’t respond, hold down the button for 8 seconds before releasing.
- A smile icon should appear, and your tracker should vibrate to indicate it has switched off.
- The device will immediately come back on, ready for use.

Turn Off Your Versa 2, 3, or Lite
Unlike the Fitbit Charge, it is possible to switch off your Fitbit Versa, whether you have the Versa 2, Versa 3, or Versa Lite. It doesn’t matter which of these three versions you have, as turning off your device will always be done identically by following these simple steps:
- On your watch, open up the “Settings” app.
- Tap “About.”
- Tap “Shutdown.”
- Tap “Confirm Shutdown.”
- When you want to turn your device back on, just hold down the left button and keep it depressed until the logo has reappeared.
The Fitbit Inspire 2 Or HR
Similar to the Fitbit Charge, it isn’t possible to turn off a Fitbit Inspire HR or Inspire 2. The device can only be turned off temporarily with a reboot or by allowing its battery to run flat entirely.
To reboot your device, just follow these simple steps:
- First, connect your device to the power cable.
- Press down the button and hold it for 5 seconds.
- Keep the button depressed until a smiley face appears and the device vibrates.
- The device will reactivate immediately.
The Fitbit Ionic
If you have a Fitbit Ionic, rest assured that your device can be switched off like the brand’s Versa series devices. You don’t have to do a reboot where the device temporarily powers off and switches back on immediately. You can turn the device off until it’s time to switch it back on without running down the battery. If you watch to turn your Ionic device off, follow these steps:
- On your watch, open up the “Settings” app.
- Tap “About.”
- Tap “Shutdown.”
- Tap “Confirm Shutdown.”
- Your watch will then turn off.
- When you want to turn your device back on, just depress any of the buttons and keep it held down until the logo appears on the device screen. The device will turn back on immediately.
Turning Off A Fitbit Alta Or Alta HR
The Fitbit Alta and Alta HR cannot be switched off. Still, they can be rebooted to temporarily switch off before they reactivate. You can do this by following these steps:
- Put the device on charge.
- While the device is charging, push down the button on its charging cable 3 times. Pause between each one of the presses.
- When the logo appears on the screen, the tracker will restart.
The Fitbit Ace or Ace 2
Similar to the Fitbit Inspire, Charge, and Alta series’, this smartwatch designed for kids – The Fitbit Ace – cannot be turned off. The device, however, can be rebooted for a temporary shutdown. The only alternative way to turn off the Ace device is to run down its battery to allow it to stay switched off for any length of time. If you want to reboot the Fitbit Ace for a temporary shutdown, these are the steps that you need to follow:
- Connect the Fitbit Ace to the charger.
- Push down the button on its charging cable 3 times. Pause briefly between each of the presses.
- When the logo appears on the screen, your device has rebooted.
- Unplug your charger.
The Fitbit Ace 2 can be rebooted in a very similar way to the Ace:
- Connect the Fitbit Ace 2 to its charger.
- Push down the button on your tracker for 5 seconds.
- Release the button, and the device will reset.
- The logo will appear on the screen to indicate the device has rebooted.
- Once the logo appears, unplug your charger.
As you can see, there are different ways to switch off different Fitbit devices, but if you follow this guide, you’ll be able to get your device to turn off or reboot.
